Grizzlies Make their Free Throws to Grab Win
posted: Thursday, March 29, 2007 at 9:34 PM

Portland was right in it until the end, but when the needed a stop, the Grizzlies had their way. It was a close one, and perhaps the Trail Blazers waited too long to make their run. They fall to Memphis, 96-92, Thursday at the Rose Garden.

Zach Randolph, who led all scorers, posted a new career high with 43 points to go along with 17 rebounds and five assists.

Tarence Kinsey, a rookie forward for Memphis, led the Grizzlies with 20 points -- 15 more than his average.

Travis Outlaw and Brandon Roy each added 13.

Portland is down two, 92-90.

Who's Kinsey you ask?

Tarence Kinsey is a rookie from South Carolina, who averages just 14 minutes and 4.7 points per game. Tonight he's scored 20.

Blazer ball, 46.8 to play

Down one, 3:18 to go. Grizzly's ball.

....

Gay misses a three and Trail Blazers recover!

On the other end Zach scores in traffic and Portlad's up, 86-85.

Rudy Gay can Dunk too
posted: at 9:10 PM

And on this one, he's fouled by LaMarcus Aldridge. If he makes the free throw after this timeout, the game will be all tied up.

Another big hand for Kevin Prichard's promotion to general manager. Prichard is now the youngest GM ever in the NBA. Not to worry though -- Kevin is one class act.

Gay rims in the free throw and we're tied at 81. 5:35 to play.

But wait!

Zach's getting his own shot at a three point play. After digging out the offensive board, Randolph scores and is fouled. He makes the "and one".

Portland 84, Memphis 81.

FREDDIE!

Sergio leads the break, and even though the Trail Blazers are outnumbered, he finds the streaking Fred Jones for a layup and one!

Junior Harrington hits on the other end, but the Trail Blazers are still up two.

77-75, Portland

Trail Blazers LEAD!
posted: at 9:01 PM

Zach hits one from just inside the three point line and Portland is finally up, 74-73.

Randolph is having and absolutely monster game. He's got 34 points, 15 boards and four assists... and there's still 9:01 left to play!

We're approaching career high territory... (it's currently 42)

Gasol FLOPS!
posted: at 8:53 PM

That's a play more likely seen in European Football! Oh man, but the refs bite and send Pau to the line where he hits one of two, but a lane violation erases the one made basket. All's well that ends well I suppose.

Zach headed back to the line, after Gasol gets Randolph on the arm.

First is..............good.

Second.....................rims off.

Trail Blazers within three.

Roy with the Hands
posted: at 8:51 PM

Roy forces a steal, then pokes away a Grizzly rebound and the Trail Blazers recover to put Travis Outlaw on the line.

He hits one of two.

Trail Blazers are within two and Rose Garden fans -- along with the spirit of Blazer Betty -- are getting in to this game.

5:29 left in the quarter, and the Trail Blazers will be shooting the rest of the way. They need to capitalize on this and go hard to the basket.

Jack hits one of two.

But on the other end Tarence Kinsey gets an easy dunk...

Now Zach is headed back to the line.

He hits the first.

And the second.

63-56, Grizzlies.

Zach Finally gets a Call

Randolph has been mobbed and hacked underneath, and FINALLY he draws a whistle. This ought to be his fourth or fifth trip to the line this quarter...

But he misses them both... short. Ouch.

Safeway Club Card holders can get 1/2 price on Trail Blazers tickets! Are you kidding me? That's on heck of a deal.

Coach McMillan calls an early timeout with 10:28 remaining. Obviously something wasn't quite to his liking.

Trail Blazers 47, Grizzlies 52

Trail Blazers Close Half Strong
posted: at 8:07 PM

A couple of baskets and the Trail Blazers cut a 10 point deficit to just four.

Zach Randolph had an astounding, yet somehow quiet, half with 21 points, eight rebounds and four assists. If Portland can come out strong in the second half and get this crowd loud, this should be an easy win.

Pau Gasol and Hakim Warrick each have 12 for the Grizzlies.

50-46, Memphis.

Zach Attack
posted: at 8:05 PM

I wont say I told you so, because it's pretty easy to figure it out, but Zach is the offensive boost this team needed... He's got the Trail Blazers last four points.

Now if the refs would stop calling ticky-tack fouls on the Trail Blazers we'd really have something.

Jarrett Jack with a jumper in the key.

50-42, Grizzlies.

Trail Blazers Needing Offense
posted: at 7:56 PM

It's not so much that Memphis, who lead 44-36 are playing that well; it's just that the Trail Blazers are having a difficult time getting the ball to stay in the basket.

After Zach Randolph scored 15 first quarter points, he has been largely abscent on the offensive end. Portland needs to feed him the ball down low and let Zach do his thing.

3:00 remaining in the half.

Dan's seeing some early minutes here tonight as well... He's in alongside Jarrett Jack, which is something of a rarity. My guess is that Nate is just searching for a hot hand, as Travis Outlaw and Martell Webster have been a little bit off the mark thus far.

37-32, Grizz. 5:31 to go in the half.

Sergio's Time
posted: at 7:31 PM

Rodriguez is in, and if what coach McMillan says is true -- that he will loosen up his leash on the young point guard -- Sergio should see some extended minutes tonight, and perhaps for the rest of the season.

But at the moment, it's Zach Randolph who's doing it all. Z-Bo's already got 12 and 5 -- and we're not even through the first quarter yet! Yikes.

Randolph's last bucket ties the game at 20.

Chippy Play

Both teams have yet to settle into their rythms. They are missing easy ones, dropping balls and the like. But Zach Randolph just scored on an easy fast break layup to put the Trail Blazers within four.

Rousing Hand for Kevin Prichard
posted: at 7:20 PM

Prichard was named general manager today, and, by their respsonse, it's clear that Portland fans are happy about the decision. Paul Allen is also in the house tonight, sitting next to Prichard.

During a pre-game press conference the two seemed very upbeat and excited about the promotion. They seem to have a very solid and friendly repoire. Sensing good things in the future for this team...

No Mighty Mouse Tonight
posted: at 7:14 PM

Former Trail Blazer and local boy Damon Stoudamire is on the bench in a suit, rather than a Grizzlies uniform tonight. Too bad, the Portland fans still have a lot of love for the little guy... but he's got a busted knee that has limited his action in recent weeks.

The Grizzlies have jumped out to an 8-5 lead, but it's too early to say that either team has any momentum.

Time to Tip-Off!
posted: at 7:10 PM

The Trail Blazers host the Memphis Grizzlies tonight. It's the fourth and final meeting between the two teams and the Trail Blazers can take the season series with a win. They lead the series, 2-1, coming into tonight's game.

But the Grizz grabbed the last 'W' in a close one here at the Rose Garden, winning by a point. It was a wild game, where Ime Udoka -- who is out tonight -- had a chance to tie, but his free throw rolled out and time expired. Memphis took that game 103-102...

Martell Webster gets the start in Udoka's place, and Brandon Roy, after the birth of Brandon Jr. is back on the court.

Here we GO!
