DOUBLE-DOUBLE!
posted: Sunday, January 14, 2007 at 8:15 PM

Early in the season, Mel Kiper, ESPN's NBA draft specialist, called Sergio Rodriguez "the steal of the 2006 draft."

Tonight, Sergio has lived up to his top billing, scoring 23 points and dishing 10 assists. He found LaMarcus Aldridge with a no-look pass off of a pick-and-roll for his game-high 10th assist. Aldridge turned the pass into a dunk and two Trail Blazer points.

The Trail Blazers, however, could not overcome the hot shooting of the Denver Nuggets. Denver hit 7 three-pointers in the third and when a team comes out firing that hot, they'll be almost impossible to beat.

Juan Dixon continued to play well off the bench for the Trail Blazers, and if he continues his dominance on the offensive side of the floor, he will garner serious attention for the Sixth Man of the Year award. Dixon finished with 15 points and 3 assists.

Webster also played well, scoring 12 points and grabbing 4 rebounds. Webster was a huge part of the amazing Trail Blazers second quarter, hitting a couple threes and playing tough defense, while Portland built a solid lead heading into halftime.

Final score- Trail Blazers 93, Denver 109...

If Coach MacMillan trust in Sergio, he will report many positive things to the team, not only assits, he is a leader and one of his marvelous assits can rise mental blocking of the team.

Sergio is one of the best playmakers I've ever seen.

Good luck Blazers

Just hoping that there's no envy playing in your coaching,Mr McMillan.Everybody remembers Isiah,Tim H.,Magic,"the Glove" or "Pistol Pete",but no one does it when it comes to guards named Nate, even if they've played for 12 years in the league and their uniform is retired(this ain't for you, "Tiny")Just give him minutes and even the defense will top and be outstanding.

GM expects 1 or 2 sellouts as the season progress, but if Sergio starts playing an important role, maybe he will be surpised. Sergio Rodriguez is the kind of player that I would go to Rose Garden to watch him playing.
He's just SPECTACULAR!!!

Webster in for Sergio...
posted: at 8:08 PM

Spanish Chocolate has finally come out of what has been his best game of the season.

Sergio has 23 points and 9 assists, which leads all Trail Blazers in both categories.

Brandon Roy is now handling the point guard position for the Trail Blazers. Roy has been relatively quiet all night. He has 9 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists for the Trail Blazers.

Juan Dixon has also had a big night thus far. After an enormous night against the Kings, Dixon has followed up that performance with 15 points and 3 assists tonight.

And just like that Coach Nate has sent Sergio back in the game! He still needs 1 assist for his first NBA double-double.

Trail Blazers are down 105 - 90.

Juan Dixon and LaMarcus Aldridge have turned up the temperature in the Rose Garden with big shots, and Sergio has put in his 23 point of the game...

Sergio also has 9 assists to go with his 23 points...

If the rally keeps up, it could be another thriller in Rose Garden!

Fourth quarter... Here we come!
posted: at 7:47 PM

The Nuggets finished with 8 three-pointers in the third quarter, and when a team shoots that well from beyond the arc, they're going to be tough to beat.

As much as it is Blaze's birthday, it's Sergio's night. The rookie from Spain has 20 points and 8 assists, which has really shocked Allen Iverson, who is normally a superb defender.

To start the fourth, Sergio led a fastbreak and shook off A.I., who was the last man back for the Nuggets.

Trail Blazers are fighting their way back into this game, but they still trail 92 - 77.

Sergio versus A.I.
posted: at 7:40 PM

And what a match-up it is...

The two guards have all but taken over this game and they've done so using surprisingly similar sets of offensive moves. Sergio has matched Iverson's speed and his 19 points have nearly matched A.I.'s 26.

The difference, however, is Denver's perimeter shooting. The Nuggets have hit 7 three-pointers so far in the third quarter, and the Trail Blazers have not been able to find an answer.

Nuggets lead 86 - 73.

Blake finally misses...
posted: at 7:32 PM

Steve Blake finally missed a three-pointer for the Nuggets, which is good news for the Trail Blazers.

Sergio also had another highlight reel play, driving baseline and finding the bottom of the basket with a finger roll. Expect to see a lot of Sergio on tonight's Plays of the Day.

Portland still trails 79 - 66, but the Trail Blazers are rallying behind Sergio Rodriguez and Martell Webster.

Denver has hit 7 three-pointer in the third quarter...

Steve Blake is smoking hot...
posted: at 7:28 PM

Blake has now hit 4 three-pointers in the second half for the Denver Nuggets and he has a game-high 23 points.

Blake has yet to miss a field goal attempt in the third quarter.

The Trail Blazers, however, have struggled to find an answer for their former teammate. Webster and LaFrentz have returned for Portland, which should hopefully bring back the energy the Trail Blazers had in the second quarter.

Trail Blazers starters return...
posted: at 7:19 PM

Coach Nate McMillan has returned all five starters to the floor to start the second half and once again the lineup has struggled.

Allen Iverson now has 15 points to lead all Nuggets and Denver has tied the game at 56 points.

Another lucky Portland fan was given a chance to win a Toyota Tundra with a half-court shot, but his attempt hit high off the backboard and failed to connect.

Iverson has found Steve Blake twice in the second half for three-pointers. Blake now has 17 points and is tied with A.I. for the team lead.

Sergio Rodriguez and Jamaal Magloire have checked in for the Trail Blazers.

Ime Udoka Scholarship
posted: at 7:15 PM

Trail Blazer small forward Ime Udoka has been one of the league's best stories all year. Not only has the former Jefferson High standout and Portland State alum returned to his hometown to start for the Trail Blazers, but he has also made his presence felt throughout the Portland community.

Tonight, Udoka donated $5,000 to Portland State University under his father's name to start a scholarship for one lucky scholar-athlete and one member of PSU's business program.

ARE YOU KIDDING?!?!

It's Sergio's World and we're all just living in it.

After a Trail Blazer turnover, the wiry point guard stayed with the play and stole the lazy Nuggets pass, turning what could've been two Nuggets points into two for the Trail Blazers.

Sergio finished the second quarter with 13 points, 2 steals, 3 rebounds and 6 assists, but even those stats don't do justice for how much impact the rookie point guard has had on this game. Sergio's energy sparked a 19 point second quarter swing, which turned a 12 point deficit into a 7 point Trail Blazer lead.

Martell Webster also had a gigantic second quarter for the Trail Blazers. Webster headed into half with 11 points and 2 rebounds.

It's still Blaze's birthday here at the Rose Garden! Portland fans were treated to a mascot battle royale at halftime. The mascots battled inside an inflatable ring until Blaze was able to body slam the Nuggets mascot and take home the victory.

Sergio is just too good...
posted: at 6:56 PM

There's no question that Allen Iverson is an All-NBA player, but Sergio Rodriguez has flashed some similar talent in this second quarter.

The Trail Blazers have isolated Sergio Rodriguez much like the 76ers used to do with A.I. and it's paid off huge for Portland.

Sergio has 8 points, 3 rebounds and 6 assists in just 10 minutes so far.

Sergio's effort has sparked the Trail Blazers, who now lead by 6, 51 - 44.

Sergio to Magloire!
posted: at 6:45 PM

It's the new Stockton-to-Malone!

Running the same pick-and-roll that made the Utah Jazz a perennial play-off team, Sergio Rodriguez broke down the Denver defense and then found Jamaal Magloire for the jam.

Sergio now has 4 points, 2 boards, and 5 assists.

Webster has also hit another three to give the Trail Blazers a two-point lead!!!

Also, for those watching at home, you might get distracted if you stare too long at Marcus Camby's shoes. The center seems to be playing tonight's contest in bright yellow moon shoes. Seriously, his shoes are what waterproof rain boots might look like in the future.

It doesn't seem like many Rose Garden fans will leave tonight's game thinking that it was Marcus Camby's shoes that made him good.

Mascot mayhem...
posted: at 6:38 PM

To the delight of the Rose Garden fans, Blaze and his buddies from around the league have dressed in inflatable suits and done their best Larry, Curly and Moe impression, while the Trail Blazers get ready for the second quarter.

Coach Nate McMillan has decided to stick with the smaller lineup of Sergio Rodriguez, Juan Dixon, Martell Webster, Raef LaFrentz and Jamaal Magloire.

Sergio has found Martell Webster twice for big three-pointers and he's also grabbed two rebounds to get the Trail Blazers back within 3 points.

In fact, in just two minutes, Sergio has 2 points, 2 rebounds, 1 steal and 4 assists for the Portland Trail Blazers.

It's a rally at the Rose Garden! Portland down 1, 33 - 32.

Brandon Roy hit one then Martell drilled a tough three-pointer from the corner.

Raef LaFrentz has also checked in for the Trail Blazers, and he gives them yet another threat from beyond the arc.

Sergio Rodriguez has also replaced Brandon Roy. Roy has scored 7 points and dished 2 assists but he also has two fouls.

At the end of the first quarter, Trail Blazers are down 31 - 19.

Iverson, after not even attempting a shot for much of the first quarter, has quickly made his presence felt, hitting a three-pointer and then converting a "did you see that?" contested lay-up and the ensuing foul shot.

He's got 8 points so far and it's the difference right now. Trail Blazers trail 24 - 16.

Headed into first timeout..
posted: at 6:20 PM

It's Blaze's birthday tonight at the Rose Garden and Portland fans can't be more excited. Not only are fans part of Blaze's birthday celebration, but nearly every NBA mascot has come to help Blaze celebrate.

With so many mascots in attendance, Blaze should find some real competition when it comes to the mascot slam-dunk challenge that's schedule for later in the game...

The game was all knotted up coming out of the timeout, 13 - 13, but Allen Iverson took his first shot of the game and connected on a 3-pointer.

It's 18 - 13 Nuggets.

Nuggets start game on fire...
posted: at 6:13 PM

After 4 quick Denver baskets, Ime Udoka finally took the lid off the basket for the Trail Blazers. Zach Randolph followed with a beautiful inside move of his own, but early on, Randolph has had trouble with the active defense of forward Reggie Evans.

Evans has a reputation for being an incredibly dirty defender, so don't be surprised if Randolph finds a way to embarrass him early and often.

Ime leads all Trail Blazers with 7 points, but the Trail Blazers are down 2, 11 - 13.

Introductions...

Allen Iverson and Steve Blake both got loud ovations from the energetic Rose Garden crowd...

Obviously, the fans hope Iverson and Blake will play well, but not well enough to beat the Trail Blazers.

With both Blake and Iverson starting in the Nuggets backcourt, Portland will have a huge size advantage, especially at shooting guard where Brandon Roy stands at 6'6".

Roy is very good at posting up smaller guards and should be able to do so all night against the smaller Denver Nuggets.

20 minutes to tip-off...
posted: at 5:40 PM

It's a sad day for Pacific Northwest sports fans, who watched as the Seattle Seahawks failed to pull of the upset in today's play-off match-up against the Chicago Bears. Even though Chicago was heavily favored, the Seahawks controlled much of the contest, until a late Bears field goal sent the game into overtime, and then a second field goal ended the Seahawks season.

With the Seahawks season over, sports fans can now focus all their attention on the streaking Portland Trail Blazers. Without Jarrett Jack, who suffered a concussion prior to the game, the Trail Blazers relied on the speed and leadership of Dan Dickau and Sergio Rodriguez. The two point guards combined for 17 points and 8 assists, and the Trail Blazers beat the Kings 95 - 87.

Tonight, the Trail Blazers face the Denver Nuggets for the first time since the year's biggest trade which sent Andre Miller and Joe Smith to the 76ers in exchange for point/shooting guard Allen Iverson.

Dickau and Rodriguez must shoulder most of the defensive load tonight and do their best to contain the explosive guard out of Georgetown. Iverson is one of few players who can single-handedly control the tempo from start to finish.

The Nuggets also recently dealt Earl Boykins to the Milwaukee Bucks for former Trail Blazer guard Steve Blake. Blake split time in the Trail Blazer backcourt last season with Sebastian Telfair.

Offensively, the Trail Blazers need a big effort from Zach Randolph, who is almost automatic from inside, and some help from their perimeter players. One of the biggest reasons the Trail Blazers were able to run away from the Kings was Juan Dixon's huge offensive outburst and it would be great if he could carry some of that momentum into tonight's contest.

What time is it?

Game Time!

Starting lineups are next...
